Kannada actress Ranya Rao sentenced to 1 year in jail in gold smuggling case, will not get bail

Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been sentenced to one year in jail in a gold smuggling case. The order was issued by the Foreign Exchange Conservation and Smuggling Prevention Act (COFEPOSA) Advisory Board, which also includes Ranya Rao and two other accused. According to the order, all three have been deprived of the right to apply for bail during the one-year jail sentence. That is, none of them will be able to apply for bail during the entire sentence. Ranya is known for her role opposite Kannada superstar Sudeep in the film ‘Manikya’. Ranya has also worked in several South Indian films. She was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) with 14.8 kg of gold at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 3 this year. Ranya was under the surveillance of DRI due to her frequent international trips. She had arrived in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight from Dubai when she was arrested on the night of March 3. DRI officials said that actress Ranya Rao was wearing a lot of gold, and she had also hidden a gold bar in her clothes. Ranya’s stepfather Ramachandra Rao is a senior IPS officer. The DRI said that as soon as she reached the airport, Ranya used to call local police personnel to drop her off at home.
