The traditional seating arrangement has been changed in all government schools in Tamil Nadu. Till now, students used to sit in a single line, one behind the other, in all classes, but now the seating arrangement has been changed. Students in Tamil Nadu will now sit in a ‘U’ shape in the classroom, i.e. ‘เฎช’ shape in Tamil. This decision has been taken by the Tamil Nadu government so that students participate in every activity, giving every student a front row experience. For now, this arrangement will be implemented on a pilot basis and will be expanded based on its success. The number of students in each class will be based on the size of the class. A press release from the Tamil Nadu government said, ‘Every voice should be heard and seen. Education should be a conversation, not a lecture.’ All the students in the class will sit in a ‘U’ shape. No student will sit in front or behind each other. You can think of it as a semi-circle. In this arrangement, desks and chairs are placed in such a way that it looks like a big U. This allows the teacher to stand in the open part of the U and see all the students, and the students can also see each other’s faces. This facilitates communication and communication between the teacher and the students.
