After the interesting results of the recent Gram Panchayat elections in Vadodara district, the election of Deputy Sarpanch and the programs for assuming the office of Sarpanch have seen great enthusiasm among the villagers. The elected Sarpanch and members include many educated youths. At Masar Road in Padra taluka, 80-year-old Shantaben Natubhai Parmar took over as Sarpanch. It has not happened for decades that Shantaben’s family, belonging to the Kshatriya community, has not had any office in any election. Shantaben’s father-in-law Shanabhai was an MLA in 1962. After that, her husband Natubhai served as Sarpanch for 2 terms. Their son Kamleshbhai served as Sarpanch for 3 terms and daughter-in-law Sudha Ben has served as District Panchayat President and Sarpanch for two terms. Similarly, when Sheetal Mali, the youngest sarpanch at 22 years old, took charge in Karchia village near Vadodara, people gathered in large numbers shouting slogans. In Gothada village of Savli, a 23-year-old Muslim girl pursuing M.Com, Tasmina Syed, was honored with a wedding procession with a DJ. In addition to cleanliness, the young and educated sarpanch has set goals like CCTV, health, education, RO plants and WiFi.
