Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 5-nation tour and during his visit to Brazil, he was conferred with the country’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva conferred the honour on PM Modi for his significant contribution in strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing India-Brazil cooperation at key global fora. After receiving Brazil’s highest civilian honour, PM Modi said after delegation-level talks with President Lula, ‘Today being honoured with Brazil’s highest national award by the President is a moment of great pride and emotion not only for me but also for 1.4 billion Indians.’ He further said, ‘I express my heartfelt gratitude to him (President Lula), the Brazilian government and the people of Brazil.’ This is the 26th international honour conferred on Modi by a foreign government since he became Prime Minister in May 2014. PM Modi was on a state visit to Brazil at the invitation of Brazilian President Lula. After completing his Brazil tour, PM Modi will leave for the last leg of his tour. From Brazil, he will visit the African country of Namibia. PM Modi and President Lula met at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia (local time). Earlier, PM Modi was given a warm welcome at the Alvorada Palace in Brazil yesterday. During his visit, PM Modi met President Lula and attended the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Apart from the BRICS Summit, PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with several world leaders. During a joint press statement with President Lula, PM Modi said, โWe share a common approach in the fight against terrorism. We firmly believe that there is no place for double standards in the case of terrorism. We strongly oppose both terrorism and those who support it.โ During the meeting, PM Modi thanked President Lula for condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack and expressing solidarity with the people of India. PM Modi also reaffirmed that India is steadfast in its resolve to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. President Lula also expressed his full support in the struggle against the menace of terrorism.
