Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has responded to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats. The Brazilian president has said, ‘The world has changed and in this new world, no country likes emperors.’ It is worth noting that Donald Trump had warned on Monday (July 7) that ‘any country that joins the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an additional 10% tariff.’ During the conclusion of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said, ‘The world needs to find ways so that our trade relations do not go to dollars. Today the world has changed and we do not need any emperors. The BRICS group is trying to find another way to organize the world from an economic perspective.’ Other important BRICS members Russia, China and South Africa have also reacted to Donald Trump. However, India has not yet responded. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, ‘The BRICS group is not trying to compete with any other power.’ Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, ‘Tariffs should not be used to put pressure on anyone.’ On the other hand, Russia has said, ‘Its cooperation with BRICS is based on a common world view. It will not be directed against third countries.’ The BRICS countries have criticized the attack on Iran and the unilateral tariff policy. Angered by this, Trump has called the BRICS countries anti-American and threatened to impose new tariffs. Even in early 2025, Trump had said, ‘If the BRICS countries try to weaken the dollar, 100% tariffs will be imposed.’
