Heavy rains overnight have wreaked havoc in the Hill Country region of the US state of Texas. According to reports, more rain fell in just a few hours than it usually falls in months, causing the Guadalupe River to flood. At least 13 people lost their lives due to the flooding in the river and more than 20 girls who were at a girls’ summer camp are missing. Rescue teams are trying to save people trapped in the strong currents by helicopter and boat. More than 10 inches of rain fell overnight in Kerrville County, causing a flash flood situation, due to which the water level in the river suddenly rose. According to the National Weather Service, the water level in the Guadalupe River near Hunt rose to 22 feet in just 2 hours. Meteorologist Bob Fogarty said, ‘The water rose so fast that people didn’t have a chance to understand.’ County Judge Rob Kelly said several bodies have been recovered but have not yet been identified. “Our efforts are ongoing, but the situation is very difficult,” he said. Camp Mystic, a private Christian girls’ summer camp in Hunt, was hit by the flooding. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said 23 girls from the camp were still missing. He appealed to the people of Texas to pray for the girls’ safety. Camp Mystic sent an email to parents saying that the families of the children who were found had been notified. However, the camp’s power, Wi-Fi and water supplies were disrupted, and the road leading to it was also washed out. Two other camps, Camp Waldemar and Camp La Junta, said on Instagram that all their children and staff were safe.
