After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) imposed a fine of Rs 10.65 crore on fugitive Lalit Modi, the Supreme Court has also given a setback. The Supreme Court has dismissed Lalit Modi’s plea against the ED’s punitive action. The ED had requested the court to direct Lalit Modi to pay the fine imposed on him to the BCCI. However, the bench of Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice R. Mahadevan, who was hearing the case, said, ‘Lalit Modi has the right to avail the benefit of alternative remedies as per law.’ Earlier, the Bombay High Court had dismissed Lalit Modi’s plea. On December 19, 2024, the Bombay High Court imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Lalit Modi and dismissed his plea seeking a direction to the BCCI to pay the fine of Rs 10.64 crore imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate for violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The High Court had said that the application filed by Lalit Modi is completely misleading, as the judicial authorities had fined Lalit Modi under FEMA. He said in the application, I was appointed as the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). During this time, he was also the chairman of the BCCI’s sub-committee, the Indian Premier League Governing Body. The application claimed that the BCCI should compensate him as per the by-laws.
