Stand-up comedy or films should not be stopped just because they hurt feelings: Supreme Court

Ordering the Karnataka government to take action against those who refused to release actor Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life in cinema halls in Karnataka, the Supreme Court said that showing films, doing stand-up comedy or reciting poetry should not be stopped just because someone’s sentiments are hurt. A bench comprising Justices Ujjwal Bhuyan and Manmohan said that there is no end to hurting sentiments in India. If a stand-up comedian says something, sentiments get hurt and people start protesting and vandalizing. Where are we going? Does this mean that we should stop showing films, doing stand-up comedy or reciting poetry just because there are protests? Where are we going? The Supreme Court said that the government has paved the way for the release of the film by filing an affidavit. Instead of issuing any guidelines or imposing fines in the interest of justice, we settle the matter. However, we have ordered the Karnataka government that if any person or group uses intimidation or violence to stop the release of the film, the government will take action against them under the existing laws and recover damages from them. Regarding the matter of seeking an apology from Kamal Haasan, the Supreme Court told the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) that we cannot allow this to happen. Why stop the release of a film just because someone has a different opinion? Why stop stand-up comedy? Why stop poetry recitals? When the KFCC lawyer defended that we had issued a letter asking for an apology considering the protests taking place in the state, we did not threaten them. Justice Bhuyan asked whether you have filed a police complaint in this matter? No. So that means you have no complaint against them. You have succumbed to public pressure. You are hiding behind them. After that, the AFCC lawyer said that he accepts any order of the court. Kamal Haasan’s Raajkamal Film International Ltd. said that one of the producers of the film has said that they have lost Rs 30 crore in revenue so far, but they have no objection to releasing the film if the government provides security at the venue. Slamming the Karnataka government, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that mobs and unethical contractors should not be allowed to come out on the roads and do whatever they want. A bench of Justices Ujjwal Bhuyan and Manmohan said that people cannot be stopped from going to watch the film by pointing a gun at them.
