Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been felicitated with Cyprus’ highest honour. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has conferred Cyprus’ highest honour, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, on Prime Minister Modi. This award is given in honour of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus. Distinguished individuals and heads of state are honoured with this award for their outstanding services. With this honour, another addition has been made to Prime Minister Modi’s international award. This is the first time in 23 years that a Prime Minister from India has visited Cyprus. According to experts, the reason behind Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus is geopolitical. India is trying to build relations with its rival Cyprus, considering its improving relations with Turkey and Pakistan. Prime Minister Modi will leave for Canada to attend the G7 summit. As part of which he has reached Cyprus today. Where he has been given a grand welcome. He has met with President Nikos Christodoulides. He will then go to Croatia, where he will meet President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkoviฤ. Prime Minister Modi has accepted the highest civilian honour of Cyprus and dedicated it to the people of the country. He said, I thank you (President of Cyprus), the Government of Cyprus and the people of Cyprus for the honour of Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III. This honour is not only my honour, but the honour of 140 crore Indians. It is an honour of their strength and aspirations. Our country is a honour of cultural brotherhood and the ideology of Vasudhaiva Kutumbaka. This award is dedicated to the important relations between India and Cyprus. On behalf of all Indians, I accept this honour with utmost humility and gratitude.
