High Court orders MMRDA to pay Rs 1169 crore to Anil Ambani’s Mumbai Metro

Gujarat SamacharMumbai High Court orders MMRDA to pay Rs 1169 crore to Anil Ambani’s Mumbai Metro High Court orders MMRDA to pay Rs 1169 crore to Anil Ambani’s Mumbai Metro The tribunal upheld the order given in 2023 There was a dispute between the partners MMRDA and Reliance Infrastructure, the operating companies of Metro One, which runs between Versova-Ghatkopar, over the project cost Mumbai: Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), which operates the city’s first metro service, Metro One, which runs between Ghatkopar and Versova areas of Mumbai, has been ordered to pay Rs 1169 crore to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), a government agency that has a minority stake in the company, in an arbitration case. The majority stake in this metro company, formed through public-private partnership, belongs to Anil Ambani’s Reliance Infrastructure. The High Court has asked MMRDA to deposit this amount in the court registry before July 15, 2025. Metro One has said that this amount will be used to reduce its debt. Ever since this metro line was built, there has been a dispute between its two partners, Reliance Infrastructure and MMRDA, regarding the calculation of the project cost. Initially, the project cost was estimated at Rs 2356 crore. Later, the project cost increased to Rs 4321 crore. MMRDA disagreed with the increase in the project cost. Due to this, there was a dispute between the two partners. To resolve this dispute, both the companies went to arbitration. In August 2023, the arbitration tribunal asked MMRDA to pay Rs 992 crore to Metro One. However, MMRDA challenged the tribunal’s decision in the High Court. But the High Court has upheld the tribunal’s decision. It is worth mentioning that Reliance Infrastructure has a 74 percent stake in Mumbai Metro. MMRDA had earlier proposed to buy this stake. However, this proposal collapsed when the Maharashtra government refused to allocate funds for this.
