A case of love affair has come to light from Sohrauna village of Padrauna Kotwali area of Kushinagar district, in which a situation of tension has arisen over the relationship of a boy and a girl belonging to different religions. The boy is from the Hindu community, while the girl is from the Muslim community, and both are adults. Due to the reaction of the family and the local administration, this personal matter has now become a subject of social and legal debate. The family of the boy alleges that the police is constantly raiding the house, the family members are being taken to the police station in the name of interrogation and tortured, and money is also being demanded. The father of the boy said, > “Our son and that girl are both adults and want to live together of their own free will. But now they have absconded due to fear and we are also forced to leave the house and live in the fields.” Local people believe that if both are adults and want to live together with mutual consent, then they should get the right to do so. > โSociety should not look at love through the lens of religion,โ said a villager. This case has not only raised the question of personal freedom of the lovers, but has also shown the need for serious reflection on the functioning of the police administration and social prejudices. At present, both the boy and the girl are missing and the boy’s family is appealing to the administration for justice.
