Doctors remove 8 cm spoon from young man’s intestine, successful operation in just 30 minutes

Doctors saved the life of a 30-year-old man by removing an 8-centimeter metal spoon stuck in his stomach through a 30-minute endoscopy procedure. This case is a great example of a medical emergency, in which the quick decision-making and expertise of the doctors gave the patient a new lease of life. After initial examination at a multi-specialty hospital in North Delhi, the patient was referred to the emergency department of Fortis Shalimar Bagh. The patient was suffering from severe abdominal pain and complained of indigestion. Upon reaching the hospital, the doctors immediately did X-rays and diagnostic imaging. It was revealed that the patient had an 8-centimeter metal spoon stuck in the upper part of the small intestine in the stomach. Dr. Ramesh Garg, HOD and Senior Director, Gastrology, Fortis Hospital, said that this was an unusual and challenging case. A metal object like a spoon getting stuck in the intestines is dangerous. It can damage the intestines or cause serious infection. Timely diagnosis and prompt action saved the patient’s life. A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) was used in this procedure. It was equipped with a camera and a light. The surgical team carefully removed the spoon from the intestines with the help of forceps. During this, no internal part of the patient was damaged. The operation was completed in just 30 minutes. After this procedure, the patient was kept under observation for 24 hours. His condition is stable. He was discharged the next day.
