Lok Sabha seats will increase to 143 in Uttar Pradesh, no increase in Kerala

The Union Cabinet last month approved the caste-based census and the government announced this month that the census will be conducted in two phases from 2026 to March 2027. At the same time, a report has been released on the situation in the country before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. According to this report, in 2029, the Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh alone will increase from the current 80 to 143, while in the southern state of Kerala, not a single Lok Sabha seat will increase. Government sources said that the central government is working on a plan to provide 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This reservation will be implemented on the basis of the new delimitation. He added that this plan can be implemented much earlier than the previously fixed time limit. The government had recently claimed that the census will be completed in two phases before March 1, 2027. For the first time since independence, this census will also include caste-based data, which will form the basis for delimitation going forward. Till now, it was believed that the delimitation process and reservation for women would be implemented by the 2034 Lok Sabha elections, but now the central government is planning very aggressively for the 2029 deadline. The biggest challenge for the Delimitation Commission will be the southern states. The southern states have been demanding that in the 1970s and 1980s they gave priority to population control. The central government has assured these states that their concerns will be addressed. Home Minister Amit Shah had said in Coimbatore in February that no seat from south India will be snatched away due to delimitation.
