‘There is a difference between declared and undeclared emergency’, Sharad Pawar’s big statement on the completion of 50 years of Emergency

NCP (SP) President Sharad Pawar on Wednesday (June 25) said that the Emergency imposed in the country 50 years ago was unfortunate, but former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had apologised for it. At a programme organised by labour unions in Mumbai, Pawar stressed that protecting the fundamental rights of citizens is a sacred duty and people need to be vigilant about protecting it even today. Sharad Pawar recalled that after consultations with socialist stalwarts George Fernandes, Chandrashekhar and Madhu Dandawate, the government in Maharashtra changed (led by the Congress) in 1978 and he became the Chief Minister. Referring to the BJP government at the Centre, Pawar said that criticising the current government is considered unacceptable. Even today, criticism of the government is not considered good in the media. Journalists are threatened. There is a difference between declared and undeclared emergency.
